July 30. Today we celebrate one of the Doctors of the Church, Saint Peter Chrysologus, which means “of the golden words.” As bishop of Ravenna, Saint Peter taught and led his diocese, showing them his commitment to the faith and to the Church’s authority. His writings have come down to us as masterful treatments on what we believe.[ ]
Saint Ignatius of Loyola
July 31. Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Saint Ignatius of Loyola, like Saint Francis of Assisi, had a conversion experience while recuperating from a serious illness. Being a military man, the Rule of Life that Saint Ignatius wrote for his followers shows the discipline and rigor of a soldier, but a soldier of faith with the mercy and compassion of the Gospel. The method of discernment developed by Saint Ignatius is used to this day by many in the Church.[ ]
August 1. Saint Alphonsus Liguori was a great moral theologian as well as the founder of the Redemptorists. He wrote in the areas of spirituality and doctrine to the edification of his diocese and others. He also suffered at the hands of some Redemptorists who betrayed his dream. Even the saints have difficulties in this life.[ ]
